The Healing Scent of Wellness

Exploring Aromatherapy’s Role in Holistic Health

By Zenab Ishtay, Aromatherapist /IFAM

Every year, the International Federation of Aromatherapists (IFA), of which I am a member,  shines a light on the power of essential oils through Aromatherapy Awareness Week, an initiative that brings attention to the vital role aromatherapy plays in healthcare management.

As one of the most respected forms of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM), aromatherapy offers much more than just pleasant scents—it delivers real benefits for mental, emotional and physical health.

A Preventive Approach

CAM therapies aim to promote health, ease symptoms and improve th equality of life—and aromatherapy does exactly that.

Research shows that it can help prevent stress-related illnesses and ease a wide range of ailments. By using plant-derived essential oils tailored to each person’s needs, aromatherapy offers a powerful, preventative approach to holistic wellbeing.

What to Expect During Treatment

Your aromatherapy journey begins with a detailed consultation. A qualified aromatherapist will take your medical history, lifestyle habits and wellness goals into account to create a treatment plan.

From this, a personalised blend of essential oils is prepared—designed to meet your unique needs.

Aromatherapists work holistically, understanding the scope of their practice without making false medical claims.

Treatments may include massage, compresses, bath blends or inhalation, with the goal of relaxing the body and stimulating the senses.

After the session, clients are often provided with aftercare advice and home products to extend the benefits.

How Essential Oils Work

Essential oils enter the body through the skin or respiratory system. When massaged into the skin, inhaled through steam, or added to a bath, the oils quickly enter the bloodstream, influencing mood, immunity and overall wellbeing.

But the application method matters—using the right dilution, dosage and delivery technique is key.

Safe Use and Storage

Because essential oils are highly concentrated, handling them with care is essential.

Here are a couple of my tips to keep them safe

and effective:

Storing in dark, cool places away from light, heat and air

Using only dark glass bottles, never plastic

Keeping oils tightly sealed and out of reach of children

Avoiding contact with eyes, mucous membranes or open wounds

Never take oils orally without professional supervision

Diluting with a carrier oil—never apply essential oils directly to your skin

Shelf Life and Quality

Pure essential oils, when stored correctly, can last over a year. However, once blended or mixed with carrier oils, their shelf life shortens—sometimes to as little as six weeks. Always source oils from reputable suppliers and discard any that smell off or have changed in consistency.

Nature’s Potent Pharmacy

Used medicinally for thousands of years, essential oils are plant-powered chemical compounds with scientifically supported effects. But natural doesn’t always mean safe—some oils can be toxic if misused. That’s why consulting a certified aromatherapist is not only wise, but vital.

A Scented Step Towards Wellbeing

Aromatherapy is not just about pampering—it’s about proactive health. Whether you’re seeking stress relief, mental clarity, or immune support, aromatherapy offers a powerful, natural path forward.

So take time for yourself and explore the healing potential of scent—your future self will thank you!
