The Dark Circle Dilemma

Solutions for teenagers and adults

By Zenab Ishtay, Aromatherapist /IFAM

Dark circles under the eyes can be a frustrating issue for both teenagers and adults. Whether it’s a teen struggling with acne, late nights, or genetics, or an adult dealing with stress, allergies, or the natural signs of ageing, dark circles often leave us looking tired, older and less vibrant.

In this article, I’ll  explore common causes, prevention strategies and natural treatments, including the benefits of essential oils.

What Causes Dark Circles?

Genetics
If your parents have dark circles, chances are you may inherit them. Genetics can determine skin thickness, pigmentation and the structure of the skin around the eyes.

Did you know that the skin under the eyes is thinner than on the rest of your face and body?

Lack of Sleep
Too little rest leads to puffiness and discolouration. Inadequate sleep raises cortisol (the stress hormone), which dilates blood vessels and makes them more visible under the skin (Read Rania Saadi’s article Destressing page xxx)

Allergies
Seasonal or skin allergies can trigger dark circles by releasing histamine, which increases blood flow and swelling in the face. Many allergies begin in childhood and persist into adulthood, sometimes making dark circles a chronic condition

Ageing
With age, skin loses collagen and fat pads shift, making under-eye darkness more noticeable. Thinner skin and reduced collagen make blood vessels more visible

Dehydration
Not drinking enough water can dull the skin, making it dry and dark

Poor Diet
Diets high in salt, sugar and processed foods can worsen dark circles. Salt, for example, causes water retention, puffiness and discolouration

Stress
Chronic stress raises cortisol, disrupts sleep and affects skin health, all of which contribute to under-eye darkness

Nutrient Deficiency
Lack of iron or vitamin B12 can cause dark circles with a purple hue

Prevention
Getting Enough Sleep: Aim for 7 to 8 hours nightly and follow a consistent bedtime routine

Staying Hydrated: Drink at least 8 cups of water daily

Eating a Balanced Diet: Choose fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and foods rich in vitamin C, omega-3s, and antioxidants

Managing Stress: Try exercise, meditation, yoga, or breathing techniques

Protection from Sun: Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen daily to prevent skin damage and premature ageing

Aromatherapy for Dark Circles

Cucumber Oil – Cooling and soothing; helps reduce puffiness and improve elasticity
Lavender Oil – Calming and stress-relieving; promotes better sleep and relaxation
Frankincense Oil – Anti-inflammatory; supports collagen production and improves tone
Lemon Oil
– Refreshing; brightens skin and reduces discolouration (avoid sun exposure after use)
Rosehip Oil – Rich in antioxidants; nourishes and rejuvenates skin while supporting collagen

Essential Oils

Mix with a Carrier Oil: Dilute a few drops of essential oil with coconut or jojoba oil before applying.

Apply Topically: Pat gently under the eyes using upward strokes to encourage lymphatic drainage. Avoid direct contact with the eyes

Face Mask Treatment: Add essential oils to a natural mask with cucumber, aloe vera, or green tea. Leave on for 10 to 15 minutes for maximum absorption

Dark circles may be common, but they’re not permanent. By addressing lifestyle habits, supporting your skin with hydration and nutrition and exploring natural remedies like essential oils, you can restore a brighter, healthier look.
