6 Ways to Celebrate Earth Day & Support Wildlife in Jordan

By Dr Silvia Zayadin, Veterinarian

Earth day, celebrated yearly on 22 April, is a commemoration and celebration of the efforts taken to protect our planet earth.

The Earth’s environmental diversity is truly breathtaking, home to tens of thousands of plant and animal species that rely on protection to thrive.
For animal lovers, Earth Day is a perfect opportunity to show our passion for wildlife and make a positive impact on the environment.

In Jordan
In Jordan, species like the Arabian Oryx, Nubian ibex and Syrian wolf rely on healthy ecosystems to thrive.
By taking action on Earth Day, we can help secure a brighter future for both wildlife and humanity.

How Can We Celebrate Earth Day?
There are many different ways to show meaningful celebration of this occasion, engaging with different activities that are eco-friendly and sustainable.
1.Visiting a Natural Reserve Operated by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN)
Jordan is home to beautiful nature reserves, such as:
Dana Biosphere Reserve in Tafileh, is a haven for rare species like the sand cat and the spiny-tailed lizard
Shaumari Wildlife Reserve – Located near Azraq Aasis, it is famous for the successful conservation and reintroduction of the Arabian Oryx
Ajloun Forest Reserve – A great place to see deer and many bird species, a spectacular place up high in the mountains surrounded by beautiful forests
By visiting these reserves, you can learn about conservation efforts and support local wildlife protection programmes.

2. Planting Trees and Native Plants
Trees are known for their positive impact on the environment as they release oxygen into the air, absorbing Carbon dioxide, providing shelter and food to different animal species
You can engage in tree planting activities organised all year round by different institutions including individual initiatives.

3. Reducing, Reusing, Recycling
Protecting animals starts at home! Choosing more sustainable lifestyle is important in protecting the environment thus the habitat of animals and plants around us.
You can start today by
Using reusable bags and bottles instead of plastic. Lots of local businesses are now offering fashionable reusable bags, get some for your next grocery shopping!
Recycling paper, glass and metal to reduce waste. There are many places mainly in Amman where you can drop off your recycling and be a responsible citizen
Save water—Jordan is a water-scarce country, and saving water helps keep natural habitats healthy and lowers the demands for fresh clean water

4. Cleaning Up a Natural Area
Many animals in Jordan suffer from pollution, especially plastic waste.
You can gather some friends and clean up a location, whether it’s a public park in the city, a wadi (valley), desert area, or beach near the Dead Sea.
Removing plastic and other waste helps protect animals from eating or getting trapped in harmful materials

5. Supporting Local Animal Shelters and Conservation Projects
Earth Day is a great time to donate to or volunteer at animal shelters and wildlife organisations.
In Jordan, groups like Al Rahmeh for Animals and Tabanni Association rescue stray dogs and cats, while the RSCN and Al Ma’wa protects wild animals

6. Educating People Around You
Spreading awareness by engaging in environmental activities in your local community, you can organise an event at your school or work place to celebrate earth day
