The most common question I am asked during the holy month of Ramadan is: “Is it ok to do my teeth during Ramadan?” or “Will I break my fast if I have to take an injection in the gums?”
Some patients erroneously think that some treatments, such as tooth extraction and injections at the dental clinic, may invalidate their fasting. As a result, these patients may refuse dental treatment during Ramadan while they are fasting.
So, does going to the dentist break my fast?
The answer is no, dental treatments and preventative procedures don’t invalidate fasting. Regarding extraction, if an extraction is performed to prevent infection from spreading, it considered to be preventable treatment, and therefore, is permissible. Also, injections in dental offices don’t affect fasting.
Does getting a filling break my fast?
The answer will depend on certain factors. All dental work including fillings, tooth extraction, dental implants and other procedures do not break your fast.
