7 Resolutions & Routines for a Healthier & Happier YOU

By Hind Yousef, Clinical Health Psychologist

As the New Year unfolds, it’s not just a time for celebration, but also a moment for reflection and setting intentions. One critical aspect often overlooked in the hustle of resolution making is mental health.

This year, let’s shift our focus to revitalise our mental well-being with resolutions and routines that promote psychological resilience and happiness.

“As we step into the new year, acknowledging the importance of mental health is the first step towards a more fulfilling life”

  1. Understanding Mental Health
Mental health, an integral part of our overall well-being, involves our emotional, psychological and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel and act, influencing everything from our decision-making to how we cope with stress. As we step into the new year, acknowledging the importance of mental health is the first step towards a more fulfilling life.

“The key is to set achievable and specific goals”

2. Setting Mindful Resolutions
While traditional resolutions often centre around physical health or career goals,
incorporating mental health objectives can be transformative. Resolutions like practising
mindfulness, dedicating time for self-care, or seeking professional help if needed, are
vital. The key is to set achievable and specific goals – for example, meditating for ten
minutes a day rather than a vague intention to “stress less.”

3. Establishing Nourishing Routines
Daily routines can profoundly impact our mental health. Incorporating activities like
regular exercise, which releases endorphins, a healthy diet and adequate sleep, can
boost mood and reduce anxiety. Additionally, routines like gratitude practice can
enhance self-awareness and positivity.

4. The Role of Social Connections
Human beings are social creatures and our relationships significantly impact our mental
health. This year, make a resolution to nurture relationships. It can be as simple as
regular calls with loved ones or being around family and friends.

5. Learning to Disconnect
In today’s digital age, constant connectivity can lead to information overload and stress.
Setting boundaries with technology, such as having limited screen-free time or digital
detox weekends, can be incredibly refreshing and mentally rejuvenating.

6. Embracing Professional Support
There’s no shame in seeking help. This year, normalise making mental health
appointments as we do for physical health. Whether it’s therapy, counselling, or joining
support groups, professional help can be instrumental in navigating mental
health challenges.

“By focusing on our mental well-being, we set the stage for a year of growth, happiness, and resilience”

7. The Power of Adaptability
Finally, remember that adaptability is key. If a particular routine or resolution isn’t
working, it’s okay to modify it. Mental health is not about sticking rigidly to a plan but
about finding what genuinely works for you.

As we embark on this new year, let’s prioritise our mental health with thoughtful resolutions and routines. By focusing on our mental well-being, we set the stage for a year of growth, happiness, and resilience. Remember, mental health is a journey, not a destination and every small step counts towards a healthier, happier you.
