Spreading the Joy

Yasmine Goussous (10) looks forward to the annual tradition of baking and decorating Christmas cookies. This year, she invites her friends Mira (10) and Reina Khayyat (6) and Hashem Toukan (10) to share this special time with her at Al Marji’ Publications’ kitchen.

Butter Cookies

The German version (according to Yasmine’s mama,

Luma ‘Odat)

200 g butter at room temperature

140 g sugar

280-300 g flour

6 tbsp fresh cream

1. Whisk butter, sugar and cream together, then add the flour gradually until you create the dough

2. Knead the dough until it is easy to handle

3. Divide the dough into two portions, wrap in nylon and refrigerate for two hours

4. Roll out with a rolling pin and cut using your favourite shapes

5. Bake at 180°C degrees until the bottom of each cookie is golden

If you add a tablespoon of cocoa, you can turn the cookies into Chocolate Butter Cookies

Decorating tips

Decorate with readymade fondant, which you can colour with food gel. It’s important to use the gel and not the liquid food colouring, as the latter will affect the consistency of the fondant. You can also find pre-coloured fondant in the market.

Tools you can use for decorating:

Cookie stamps (the children used heart-shaped stamps here)

Food colouring markers

Coloured fondant

Edible sprinkles, including pearls
