Boosting your Child’s Brain Power
Research in recent years suggests that intelligence is not a fixed trait. A number of centres in Jordan are now focusing on boosting children’s cognitive skills.
Here are a few:
Mind Matters
A brain training centre licensed by BrainRx in the United States, Mind Matters offers cognitive assessments as well as training aimed to enhance mental abilities which include:
Attention
Logic
Reasoning
Processing speed
Memory
Visual processing
Auditory processing
According to Educational Psychologist Dina Halaseh, co-founder and director of cognitive training at Mind Matters, “cognitive and learning weaknesses can be overcome and transformed through brain training.”
Brainy Nation
Brainy Nation focuses on strengthening cognitive skills with one-on-one personalised training for children and adults. The game-like mental exercises are designed to sharpen the core skills the brain uses to think, learn, read, reason and pay attention. The Centre emphasises that brain training is not tutoring: “Our programmes don’t teach information; they change how the brain grasps and uses incoming information.”
Our podcast pick for your child’s mental and emotional wellbeing
Peace Out, for ages five to 12, consists of short stories that help children calm down and relax at the end of their day by guiding them through visualisation and breathing exercises. A lot of the stories are about picturing yourself going somewhere, like a trip to the moon. Chanel Tsang, who hosts Peace Out, says that “imagination is a superpower.” She explains, “Visualising going somewhere else can allow us to take a pause from what’s happening at the moment that may be stressful or upsetting.”
